New heart rate sensor achieves 80% reduction in power consumption


Lausanne, Switzerland, April 27, 2017

Today, ActLight presented the next generation Heartrate Sensor for wearables, featuring a remarkable 80% reduction in power consumption compared to what is currently available on the market, and still delivering the same performance. The Heart rate sensor is based on ActLight’s proprietary Dynamic PhotoDiode (DPD) technology and has been developed in co-operation with a global MedTech semiconductor vendor and École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL).

In existing smartwatches and wearables, up to 80% of the power consumption is related to heart rate monitoring when it is activated. A new generation of sensors, developed by ActLight in close co-operation with EPFL, provides high precision heart rate monitoring with significantly reduced energy consumption. This will result in much improved battery lifetime in future smartwatches as well as allowing for extended use of heart rate sensing features related to sports and wellbeing. Already tested and calibrated, ActLight’s heart rate sensor is ready to be produced in large series to equip next generation wearables.

ActLight Announces Heartrate Sensing Project with ON Semiconductor

ActLight, a Swiss photonics technology firm known for its breakthrough Dynamic PhotoDiodes (DPD), has announced a project of next-generation sensors for low- energy heartrate sensing for wearable devices in cooperation with ON Semiconductor, driving innovation in energy efficient electronics.
